Vintage Restaurant Magnets

Patrons were incredibly loyal to The Broken Drum on Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica and were shaken when the restaurant closed in 1986, according to local newspaper reports we've seen. The hamburger joint was a long-standing institution and is even now remembered fondly by former customers. With its open fire and wood-burning ovens and fresh flowers on every table, the restaurant served food until 4am and many aspiring actors and actresses used it as a place to meet and fret about their careers. The menu cover, showing a clown beating a broken drum, with the words "you can't beat it," is thought to be from the 1940s.

The Melody Lane Cafes (there were several in the Los Angeles area) were owned and operated by the Pig'n Whistle Corporation. First acquired in 1927, Melody Lane was an established downtown cafe near the music publishing companies and was a popular hangout for musicians and radio personalities. When prohibition was repealed, Melody Lane began building cocktail lounges within their units. They were one of the first Los Angeles restaurants to do so. The Hollywood Canteen operated at 1451 Cahuenga Boulevard in the Los Angeles, California, neighborhood of Hollywood between October 3, 1942, and November 22, 1945 (Thanksgiving Day), as a club offering food, dancing and entertainment for servicemen, usually on their way overseas. Even though the majority of visitors were US servicemen, the canteen was open to servicemen of allied countries as well as women in all branches of service. A serviceman's ticket for admission was his uniform and everything at the canteen was free of charge.

Ponderosa Steakhouse and Bonanza Steakhouse are a chain of buffet/steakhouse restaurants that are a part of Homestyle Dining LLC based in Plano, Texas.[2] Its menu includes steaks, seafood, and chicken entrées, all of which come with their buffet. A lunch menu is also served. Unlike other chains with two names, such as Checkers and Rally's, which uses only one of the names in a given region, restaurants in a given region could be named either Bonanza or Ponderosa. This is because Bonanza and Ponderosa were separate companies, which were later merged under the Metromedia Restaurant Group. The names of the restaurants were derived from the TV series Bonanza, which was set at a place called Ponderosa Ranch.

Arnold's Restaurant is the name of a popular Milwaukee "greasy spoon"- a local hangout for most of the characters in Happy Days, especially Fonzie, Richie, Potsie, Ralph and their friends and schoolmates.

Jade Pagoda Restaurant Seattle Jimmy Woo's Jade Pagoda! This #Broadway institution was opened in 1943 by the Woo family, and (intentionally) didn't change much over its 6+ decades, with a rotary payphone, a killer jukebox & signature neon "Cocktails" sign. With cheap, stiff AF drinks & loyal regulars, Jade Pagoda had that old working-class #CapitolHill character & was part of a (now seemingly dying) breed of mid-century Chinese American restaurants/lounges/cocktail bars in #Seattle.

After spending the last 25 years entombed beneath a dull drop ceiling and the beigest of beige drywall, Santa Monica’s vintage 1959 Penguin coffee shop is being restored to its Googie glory. The jaunty-roofed dining room was designed by architects Armet & Davis (you know their work from Norms, Pann’s, and Johnie’s on Wilshire) and served up burgers and malts for generations before the building became a dentist’s office in 1991.

Doggie Diner was a local fast food chain serving hot dogs and hamburgers in San Francisco that operated from 1948 to 1986. At one time there were 30 locations around the San Francisco Bay Area, mostly concentrated in San Francisco and were quite iconic with their giant fiberglass doggie heads on their signs. This version of the Doggie Diner design includes an embellished version of their original logo. This Doggie Diner Vintage design includes a realistic distressing to make it look like an old school original, but if you'd like a new looking version, check out my shop as I've got one!

The early astronauts used to eat at Ramon's Restaurant at Cocoa Beach. It was also a great place to watch rocket launches!
