This 7th-century Christian monastery, is a legendary monastery that has sat in silent ruin for centuries. And apart from being home to 3 terrifying spectres, dating back to Saxon times, the eerie setting of the ruined abbey inspired Bram Stoker to pen his immortal novel of horror, Dracula.

199 Steps From Whitby Abbey The 199 Whitby Abbey steps are one challenge visitors to the town cannot resist. They’re one of Whitby's most famous attractions. But, how much do you know about the history of Whitby steps? The first record of the Whitby Abbey steps comes from 1340, but they’re believed to be even older. The steps were originally made from wood. It was not until 1774 that the original wooden steps were replaced with stone from Sneaton.

It was the view as we walked down into Whitby from Sandsend and looked up to see the iconic abbey overlooking the houses. Is it beautiful or a little sinister with its Gothic associations as the scene of Dracula's last stand?
