A fighter pilot is a military aviator trained to engage in air-to-air combat, air-to-ground combat and sometimes electronic warfare while in the cockpit of a fighter aircraft. Fighter pilots undergo specialized training in aerial warfare and dogfighting (close range aerial combat). A fighter pilot with at least five air-to-air kills becomes known as an ace. Fighter pilots are one of the most highly regarded and desirable positions of any air force. Selection processes only accept the elite out of all the potential candidates. An individual who possesses an exceptional academic record, physical fitness, healthy well-being, and a strong mental drive will have a higher chance of being selected for pilot training.

Billy Bishop glances over his shoulder at the plumenting German plane he has just shot down while an approaching German pilot opens fire from above. William Avery Bishop is credited with 72 victories in the air and was a Victoria Cross recipient of the First World War. He is considered Canada's top pilot of WWI. In this illustration I have Bishop flying the French built Nieuport 17 with the top mounted Lewis machine gun. The Royal Flying Corps found the fuselage mounted Vickers guns to be unreliable and often had them omitted. The Vickers machine gun was synchronised to fire through the propeller.
