The Franklin Expedition, or Franklin's lost expedition, was a British voyage of Arctic exploration led by Captain Sir John Franklin that departed from England in 1845 aboard two ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. The expedition was meant to traverse the last unnavigated section of the Northwest Passage.

The United States Antarctic Research Program (USARP) has operated in Antarctica since 1959, sending teams of scientists down south every Austral Summer to discover new information about the frozen continent. My grandfather was one-such explorer, and he worked in Antarctica throughout the early years of the 1960s. One of the greatest gifts I ever received was his old exploration parka, emblazoned with the logo of the USARP. The logo speaks of adventure, danger and exploration in the most isolated part of the world. Whenever you don one these exploration-inspired pieces of clothing or write in your USARP-styled notebook, you can celebrate the endeavour and the ingenuity of the brave men and women who have made Antarctica their home.

Love for Antarctica

A huge tabular iceberg protrudes from the sea ice about the height of a 10 story building, Ross Sea, Antarctica. About 6 to 7 times more is below the ocean. The bright sun in the middle of the day creates a perfect blue and white seascape. Such tabular icebergs are new, that is less than 1 year old, having recently calved from the glaciers, or the ice tongues or the Ross Ice Shelf. The wave has been created by the wash from the ship. I painted Discovery because of its historic significance to Scott of The Antarctic, It shows Discovery on the banks of The River Thames, London, with St Pauls Cathedral and Blackfriers Bridge in the background. It's sunrise and the sky is yellow turning to blue on a summers day. The plain trees on the Embankment are in full bloom. About the history of the ship Discovery. Purchased by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1905 and converted for use as a merchant. Laid up from 1912 - 1915 during WWI. From 1915 - 1920 traded under charter in European waters from Archangel in Arctic Russia to the Black Sea. I created this concept as a memory of the Antarctic expedition of Captain Robert Scott 1910-1913.
