Highway 80 to the Hermitage in the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park takes you through the fabled Mackenzie district. Each turn in this wonderful traffic free road will surprise you with a grand vista of pristine alpine lakes, crystal clear rivers and the majestic Southern Alps.

The Hooker River was definitely in a rush to get as far away as possible from Mount Cook, which stands imposing at the end of the Hooker Valley. For the first half of the Hooker Valley Track, Mount Cook was hidden behind the mountain to the right, but it finally came into view here and stood tall over us for the rest of our walk.

One of my favourite shots from a helicopter ride up Franz Josef Glacier and around the Southern Alps. Mighty Aoraki/Mount Cook looks impressive no matter whether you're floating in the clouds or firmly rooted on the ground!

My second time up Mueller hut because it's one of my favourite places in the world. I've yet to manage to paint Mt Cook Aoraki from the Hooker Valley on a clear day but this view from Sealy Tarn was a pretty good view of the beauty!

At the far end of the Hooker Valley, below Aoraki/Mt Cook in the South Island of New Zealand is the Hooker Glacier and Lake. This was close to the far end of our walk in brilliant sunny weather. We did scramble along the lateral moraine next to the lake to get more interesting photos later on. This valley contains the most spectacular scenery I have ever seen. Red Tarns is a quick steep walk from Mt Cook/Aoraki Village and to be honest... in the weather we had coming in, it was a big puddle with some red plants in it! The real gem came when I spotted a trail heading even higher over the ridge line. The view over the back to the Tasman River valley is hands down one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. This was painted at home after our trip because at the time we were being chased off the hill by a rain storm!

If you're ever in Mt Cook/Aoraki Village, get up to Mueller Hut! It's the most dramatic out of this world location that I've hiked to yet. If you sit still long enough in the summer you'll catch bits of the ice shelf falling.
