Although this engine could be considered a GWR engine, it was built after nationalisation, hence was always a BR engine. The Black Fives were a mixed traffic locomotive, a "do-anything go-anywhere" type, designed by William Stanier and several members of the class survived to the last day of steam on British Railways in 1968, with eighteen of the type making it into preservation.

A black and white image of 5428 LMS Class 5 or "Black Five" as the class is lovingly called. 5428 is a steam locomotive built in 1937 for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). In 1967 it was withdrawn from British Rail service, preserved and named Eric Treacy after the former Bishop of Wakefield, an eminent railway photographer. The 720 indicates this is the "Up" train, IE the return to London. The BR Standard Class 7, otherwise known as the Britannia Class, is a class of 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive designed for mixed traffic duties.

A digital art image of Castle Class locomotive 'Pendennis Castle' waiting at a country station. This is a locomotive with a prodigious history. It left the Great Western Railway's Swindon works in 1924 and in 1925 successfully took part in trials against the A4 Pacifics on the LNER between Kings Cross and Doncaster. In 1925 it was exhibited in the British Empire Exhibition as the most powerful express locomotive. It was finally withdrawn from service in 1964 and is now preserved at Didcot.

The engine driver is offering the single track working token to the Signalman who is just out of shot. Without the relevant token the train can't proceed along the single track sections. Royal Scot was built in 1927 by London Midland & Scottish Railway for the express service from London to Birmingham, Manchester through to Glasgow. She was chosen to appear on behalf of Britain at the 1933 'Century of Progress' exhibition in the USA and toured the USA and Canada covering 11 194 miles.
