Drawn January 2015. This is a drawing of the Lothian Chambers on George the IV Bridge in the heart of Scotland's Capital, Edinburgh. The Building currently has function rooms and houses, amongst other things, the Registrars Office. I've set this at Night, with lighted Windows: the People in the background [the Royal Mile, leading to St Giles] are drawn in Victorian period style. With the absence of Motor-cars You can see the era I'm implying this is set in. Rolling waves heading back into the North Sea towards Bass Rock this image was taken on Seacliff Beach East Lothian not to far from North Berwick. This beautiful coastal seascape will brighten up any bare wall.

A view from the Firth of Forth of the three bridges linking Fife on the north bank and Lothian on the south. In the foreground is the new Queensferry Crossing taking the M90 over the estuary. This bridge, opened in August 2017 is the longest 3 pier cable-stayed bridge in the world - 1.7 miles long! Behind it is the Road Bridge opened in September 1964 and in the background the unmistakable cantilever structure of the Forth Rail Bridge which was opened in 1890 - now a World Heritage Site!

The oldest of the three bridges which cross the Firth of Forth in the west of Scotland. This iconic steel cantilever structure - a symbol of Scotland's engineering heritage - connects Fife on the north bank and West Lothian in the south - just west of Edinburgh. It was voted Scotland's greatest man-made structure in 2016 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction started in 1882 and the bridge was opened by the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, in 1890.

The Forth Rail Bridge here as a digitally produced stylised graphic drawing. This was produced from my original image captured just before passing under the bridge. This is the oldest of the three bridges which cross the Firth of Forth in the west of Scotland connecting Fife on the north bank and West Lothian in the south. It was voted Scotland's greatest man-made structure in 2016 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Almond Castle, formerly known as Haining Castle, is a ruined 15th century tower to which additions were made in the 16th century. The earliest recorded reference to the then Haining Castle is from 1425, when it was owned by the Crawfords of Haining. It is likely that it was built some time not much earlier by a Crawford, perhaps William de Crawfurde de Manuel, who owned the surrounding barony of Manuel of which Haining Castle was the principal seat. William de Crawfurde de Manuel appears in written records as early as 1417. Originally built on an L-plan, the main block is rectangular aligned approximately east to west, with a smaller wing projecting from the east end of the north wall. The view looking North from the top of Cairnpapple Hill in West Lothian, Scotland over the River Forth to the Kingdom of Fife. At 310m or just over 1000ft in height the hill offers one of the best viewpoints in central Scotland. Cairnpapple Hill is situated in the Hilderston Hills within the western range of the Bathgate Hills in the parish of Torphichen, West Lothian, in south-east Scotland. Cairnpapple Hill also contains one of the most significant prehistoric monuments in Scotland. On the right you can see Cockleroy Hill, a conspicuous crag-and-tail rising steeply from the west to a height of 278m (912 feet) in the northwest of Beecraigs Country Park, 2 miles (3 km) northeast of Torphichen.

This one is for fans of seriously good fiction. The Oxford Bar on the corner of Young Street and Young Street South Lane in the New Town area of Edinburgh, Scotland. The name of the bar will be familiar to fans of the Scottish fiction writer Ian Rankin as it is the favoured pub of his Inspector Rebus character in the long running Rebus series of books and and also in the TV series. In reality of course, the Oxford Bar has long been one of a handful of Edinburgh watering holes favoured by Scottish writers and artists since the 19th century including Ian Rankin himself. According to tradition, St. Bernard's Well near Stockbridge in Edinburgh, Scotland was re-discovered by three Heriot's school boys while fishing in the Water of Leith in 1760. Legend has it that it was originally discovered by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, the founder of the Cistercian Order, in the 12th Century. After being poorly received at court, and suffering from a sickness, he went to live in a cave near the Water of Leith. There, he found the spring and drank its healing waters until his strength returned. Chemical analysis revealed that the water was similar to the sulphur springs at Harrogate in Yorkshire. In September 1760 the mineral spring was covered by a small wellhouse.

Cairnpapple Hill is one of the most important prehistoric sites on mainland Scotland. Here you can see a 1949 reconstruction of a 4000 year old burial site and a 1990s communications tower, the very old and the very new. The archaeology on the main site here spans a remarkable period of some 4000 years of activity, from about 3500 BC through to c.500 AD, with its major features being a Neolithic henge and circle, followed by a series of three Bronze Age cairns with cist burials, and a Late Iron Age cemetery. Cairnpapple was used from about 3,000 BC to 1400 BC firstly as a ceremonial site then several centuries later as a burial site. 5000 years ago, or around 3000BC, our Neolithic ancestors built a henge here.

Black Castle House on the High Street, South Queensferry, Scotland is a three storey building, harled and painted black with the date 1623 on the facade. The upper floor has three windows with carved and scrolled detail. The dormer pediments are all inscribed: the east one with the date, a love knot and hearts; the centre one with WLMS; the west one with WL and a love knot. The initial WL and MS refer to William Lowrie and his wife Marion Speddie. William's sister-in-law, Janet Lowrie, was condemned to death as a witch and was probably burnt at Ferry Muir, which was where many witches were executed in the 17th century.

The Camps Viaduct (built 1820) in Almondell and Calderwood Country Park, West Lothian, Scotland. Closed about 1960, the Viaduct used to carry the line from the Shale Oil works at Pumpherston to the North British Railway at Camps. It is now part of the National Cycle Network route 75, and provides magnificent views of the river from above. The park is a semi wild nature retreat open to all. This is an HDR version.
