Marsha Johnson

Marsha P. Johnson (August 24, 1945 – July 6, 1992) was an American gay liberation activist and self-identified drag queen. Known as an outspoken advocate for gay rights, Johnson was one of the prominent figures in the Stonewall uprising of 1969. A founding member of the Gay Liberation Front, Johnson co-founded the gay and transvestite advocacy organization S.T.A.R. (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries), alongside close friend Sylvia Rivera. From 1987 through 1992, Johnson was an AIDS activist with ACT UP. Shortly after the 1992 pride parade, Johnson's body was discovered floating in the Hudson River. #PrideMonth

In honor of the woman who threw the first brick and started what we now know as Pride.

A great design that expresses a simple but very strong message. Every person has the right to be themselves and no-one has the right to judge another for their differences. The differences between us make this world the beautiful place that it is.

This is an art piece of Marsha P. Johnson, a black trans woman, artist, and activist who has often been named as one of the first of those present to defy the police during the Stonewall Protests of 1969. These details matter, of course, but in a broader sense, the legacy of the Stonewall uprising is one of community, and of a moment in history when marginalized people stood up and declared that they’d had enough.

These lovely ladies started it all.
