St Paul's Cathedral in Mdina in Malta is believed to have been built on the site where St Paul met the Roman Governor after his shipwreck off Malta in 60 AD and its construction was started in the twelfth century and substantially rebuilt following an earthquake in the 17th and 18th century. Mdina was once the capital city of Malta before Valletta took the honour and is know as 'The Silent City'

Mdina is the ancient capital city of Malta and the walled city can trace it's history back more than 4000 years. It is believed that St. Paul lived inside the grotto know as Fuori le Mura (outside the city walls) now known as St. Paul's Grotto in Rabat. Lamp lit by night and referred to as "the silent city", Mdina is fascinating to visit for its timeless atmosphere as well as its cultural and religious treasures.

Mdina is a fortified city in the Northern Region of Malta which served as the island's capital from antiquity to the medieval period. The city is still confined within its walls, and has a population of just under 300, but it is contiguous with the town of Rabat, which takes its name from the Arabic word for suburb, and has a population of over 11,000 (as of March 2014)

A carriage awaits it's passengers adjacent to the Mdina Main Gate, Malta. Mdina is known as Malta's silent city - when visiting, there is almost a quiet understanding to be as silent as possible within the walls. Cars are not allowed within the walls; except for a few residents with a special license and emergency services.
