I mean.. all these pond-dwelling birds do have some habitual things in common right? What started off a simple prompt seems to have taken wings and flown into a nice wee topic.

Black and white animal illustration of a baby moorhen chick. Drawn using one of my own photographs as reference, this drawing was created by hand using fine ink marker pens on Bristol board. Common moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), also known as waterhen or swamp chicken are a widespread species of waterfowl found in many parts of the world. Moorhen are a common sight at parks and lakes in England but it's quite rare that I get to see a chick out of water like this one, it's always a surprise to see those feet! Moorhen are very distinctive looking birds, displaying black and brown plumage with a few areas of white. Their bills are a striking red with yellow tips and yellow legs. Chicks are very fluffy and almost black all over.

Pretty little moorhen, in amongst the iris and forsythia flowers. Bright, sunshine yellow and iris-blue colours to make you think of spring and summer. Intricate hand drawn detail, with the final artwork created digitally.

Saw this chick at a local lake park during the Spring Season. I was concerned it seemed to be on its own but was grateful to get a shot like this.

Common Gallinule at Edge of Water by Debra Martz It's not often that I see the full length of the colorful legs and feet of the Galinule (Gallinula galeata) so I was quite pleased as this one posed on the outer edge of the water. I, also, liked the patterns made by the movement of the brackish marsh water at Leaonabelle Birding Center of Port Aransas, Texas. A common moorhen runs off to who knows where.

I have drawn the coot many times, I like its drop-shaped body an white knob on the forehead very much. The color of its feet is always a puzzle, it can vary from blue to grey to yellow.
