Asteroid impact. Illustration of a large asteroid colliding with Earth on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. This impact is believed to have led to the death of the dinosaurs some 65 million years ago. The impact formed the Chicxulub crater, which is around 200 kilometres wide. The impact would have thrown trillions of tons of dust into the atmosphere, cooling the Earth's climate significantly, which may have been responsible for the mass extinction. A layer of iridium- rich rock, known as the K/T boundary, is thought to be the remnants of the impact debris.

Aurorae are caused by the interaction between energetic charged particles coming from the Sun and molecules of gases in the upper atmosphere (about 100km). A stream of charged particles, known as the solar wind, flows continuously from the Sun's corona towards interplanetary space at speeds of 400-500 km/s. These particles do not reach the Earth's atmosphere due to the shielding effect of the Earth's magnetic field. However, violent solar activities such as solar flares emit highly energetic particles which penetrate this shield and ionise molecules in the atmosphere.

The neutrino enters the bubble chamber at far right, but does not leave a track itself because it is electrically neutral. It interacts almost immediately with a proton in the liquid filling the bubble chamber, producing a spray of particles that travel towards the left, curving in the chamber's magnetic field. The V- shaped pairs of tracks in the lower half of the picture, which end in characteristic spiral curlicues, are electron- positron pairs produced from gamma-rays.

Any charged particle passing through the liquid in this state leaves behind a trail of tiny bubbles as the liquid boils in its wake. These bubbles are seen as fine tracks, showing the characteristic paths of different types of particle. The paths are curved due to an intense applied magnetic field. The tightly-wound spiral tracks are due to electrons and positrons.

Newton's cradle. Computer illustration of a device known as Newton's cradle. It consists of a set of balls resting against one another that are free to swing from the bar (not seen) they hang from. Here, one of the balls has been sent swinging towards the others. The kinetic energy with which it strikes the first ball will be transferred from ball to ball, finally propelling the last ball away from the others. As this ball swings upwards, its kinetic energy becomes potential energy. The opposite energy transfer occurs as gravity pulls the ball back down to strike the others. As the balls move, energy is lost to friction until they come to rest.
