WJZZ Detroit Jazz Radio

WMET originally hit the air on March 9, 1959, as WDHF, owned by Hi-Fi systems and record store owner James DeHaan. Its call sign stood for DeHaan Hi-Fi and operated out of DeHaan's store in Evergreen Park, Illinois with its transmitter and tower in Oak Lawn. The station was primarily an easy listening format and would eventually go to a Top 40 model after changing ownership a few times. In 1976, the station's call letters were changed to WMET, while retaining its top 40 format and by 1979 had embraced an album-oriented rock (AOR) format.

If you grew up in Detroit in the '60s and '70s, you probably listened to CKLW, an AM radio station from just across the river in Windsor, Ontario. Each week, CKLW would distribute their Big 30 record list to numerous stores throughout the Motor City which included the list of albums that made their Big 30 list that week, based on their ongoing surveys and polls. This design is based on what is probably their longest running and most recognizable logo which was came out in 1970 and aside from being used on the actual printed Big 30 album lists, could be seen on stickers, hats, and of course, on t-shirts.

Vintage Technics Classic

For nearly two decades in Dallas, a strange, winged elephant creature could be found on car windows, billboards, and the t-shirts of self-proclaimed “Zoo Freaks.” The creature was part of the logo for Dallas radio station KZEW, a station that provided the rock ’n’ roll soundtrack for a generation of locals in the post-Woodstock '70s. KZEW was a pioneer on the FM dial when there were few rockin' FM stations and those that did exist played out tranquilizing music for doctors’ offices. Life at KZEW was a zoo in itself. It was kind of like the Smothers Brothers on LSD had taken over a major broadcast facility, right in the heart of the Bible Belt. The jocks let loose with a diverse blend of rock music and didn't make use of a rigid playlist.

Hitting the air in 1936, XERB was an early 'border blaster' station at 730 kHz on the AM dial. While broadcasting from across the border on Mexico's Baja peninsula, at Rosarito Beach, near Tijuana, XERB was operated as a Los Angeles radio station and packed massive power giving them coverage well beyond Los Angeles and the Inland Empire as well as most of Northern Mexico. As part of the North American Regional Broadcasting Agreement in 1941, the station moved from 730 to 1090. In 1965, Wolfman Jack moved to XERB and quickly turned it into 'Big X Soul Monster Radio' with his legendary mix of rowdy rock, raw rhythm and blues, and verbal antics. In the early 1970s, many FM stations around the country were experimenting with free form music hosted by young disc jockeys, and New York's Capital District Region Q104 FM was one of them. In 1975, Q104 FM had gleaned their niche from the free form programming and began to air album-oriented prog rock. Two years later, Q104 FM debuted the fresh Q104 branding for the station, touting their 'live album rock' format, which continued well into the later years as the station began adding more traditional rock music into the mix.

WKRP in Cincinnati was a sitcom television series that focused on the misadventures of the staff of a struggling radio station in Cincinnati, Ohio. The show was created by Hugh Wilson and was based upon his experiences working in advertising sales at Top 40 radio station WQXI in Atlanta. Many of the characters and even some of the stories (including season 1 episode 7, “Turkeys Away”) are based on people and events at WQXI. This design is based on the t-shirts the crew wore during their annual baseball game against WPIG in season 2, episode 3.

Los Angeles, CA

WQXM 97.9 was a 56,000-watt FM stereo radio station that went on the air in December 1967 from studios at the tower site at 8320 Starkey Road in Seminole. The station was owned by FM Enterprises. Inc., and initially aired a classical music format, which was dropped in 1969 to make way for an elevator music format promoted as Stereo 98. A new transmitter boosted power to 100,000 watts in 1973. Plough Broadcasting acquired WQXM in 1975 and a few years later, the elevator music format was out, an AOR format was in, and the station was rebranded as 98 Rock. This design comes from the 1980 brand update, which was a common sight throughout the Clearwater/Tampa area on billboards and bumper stickers.

WASH evolved from experimental FM station, W3XL, which was first licensed in September 1945 in Kansas City, and later moved to Washington, D.C. WASH debuted as Washington's second commercial FM station on December 17, 1946, initially relaying Overseas Service programming and broadcasting thrice-daily time signals while building their studio. In 1968, Metromedia acquired the station, trading news for an adult contemporary format. In the early '80s, the station attempted to do a Top 40/CHR format, publicized with a rather strange "WASH with the Stars" advertising campaign. After a few years with little success against D.C.'s established Top 40 stations, WASH returned to a full service adult contemporary format.

Donna Lee Halper (born February 14, 1947 in Dorchester, Massachusetts) is a Boston-based historian and radio consultant. Beginning in 1968, Halper worked as a radio disc jockey and music director, and is credited with discovering the progressive rock band Rush while at WMMS in Cleveland in 1974. She has taught courses in broadcasting, media criticism, and media history, and is author of a number of books, including the first book-length study devoted to the history of women in American broadcasting, Invisible Stars: A Social History of Women in American Broadcasting.
