Stilbocarpa polaris, commonly known as the Macquarie Island Cabbage, is a species of flowering plant usually placed in the family Araliaceae. It is a megaherb, growing up to about a metre in height, native to the subantarctic islands of New Zealand and to Australia’s Macquarie Island. It was used as a food source and a scurvy preventative by early explorers and sealers. On Macquarie Island it is threatened by introduced Black Rats and European Rabbits. One of the many beautiful beaches in a small uninhabited island south of Crete (Greece), in the Libyan sea, called Koufonissi. Koufonissi is located around 20 miles to the the southeast of my hometown, Ierapetra. I can assure you there you will find some of the most beautiful beaches you have ever seen (and not "packed" even in the heart of August). There is a boat going, now and then, to Koufonissi, departing from the village of Makrigialos, 25 km east of Ierapetra. Wandering Albatross, Diomedea exulans,calling to its mate from the nest on Prion Island, just off the coast of South Georgia in the Southern Atlantic. When the birds return to breed, or when one has been out fishing & returns to the nest the couple conduct a pair bonding ritual. Nests are on the ground in the tussock grass & are well spread out from each other. Both the male and the female take care of the nest and the young.
