During Desert Shield and Desert Storm the 2nd Battalion of the 1st Air Defense Artillery deployed with the Hawk surface-to-air missile system. Among many of the incidents that took place was The Big Jump West, the destruction of one of the HIPIRs, scud alerts, a chemical "attack" and the slow convoy north into Iraq. 2-1 ADA was also equipped with the Alpha system, a secret weapon which used passive monitoring to detect and destroy enemy aircraft.

From an episode in Saudi Arabia. ADA units sometime come under the control of the Air Component Commander, who is often USAF.
