Voyager 1 and 2 are out there, somewhere, moving so fast for so long they've officially left the solar system. And they're probably thirsty...

There were two Voyagers, and they were made with intense precision. Slow poured, and slowly enjoyed by generations.

Voyager 2 is a space probe launched by NASA on August 20, 1977, to study the outer planets and interstellar space beyond the Sun's heliosphere.

Voyager 2 is a space probe launched by NASA on August 20, 1977, to study the outer planets. A part of the Voyager program, it was launched 16 days before its twin, Voyager 1, on a trajectory that took longer to reach Jupiter and Saturn but enabled further encounters with Uranus and Neptune.

Voyager's Golden Record. View of the Golden Record carried by Voyagers 1 and 2 as a greeting to any intelligent life which may find them. The records give audio and visual information about Earth and its people, including greetings in 55 languages. At upper left are details of how to play the record to listen to the sounds, with information on viewing the images at right. The circle in the rectangle is the first image, so aliens will know their interpretation is correct. The lines at lower left show Earth's position relative to 14 pulsars. The 2 circles at lower right represent the hydrogen atom. The Voyagers were launched in 1977, and will reach nearby stars in 40,000 years.

Saturn. Computer-enhanced Voyager 2 image of the planet Saturn. Two of its moons are seen at upper left. Saturn is a gas giant planet composed mainly of hydrogen and helium. Traces of gases such as ammonia and methane are also present. Its ring system is mostly made up of millions of orbiting chunks of ice. It is the second largest planet in the solar system (behind Jupiter), and has a diameter of around 120,000 kilometres. It is around 95 times heavier than Earth. This image was taken from a distance of 43 million kilometres on 12th July 1981.

Neptune and Triton. Voyager 2 image of the gas giant planet Neptune (upper frame) with its largest moon Triton visible just below centre. Neptune's atmosphere, like that of the other gas giant planets, comprises mainly hydrogen and helium, with traces of methane. It has the strongest winds of any solar system planet, reaching over 2000 kilometres per hour. Triton is a large moon, 2700 kilometres in diameter, which has a surface temperature of -235 degrees Celsius. This image was taken when Voyager 2 was 4.86 million kilometres from Neptune on 29th August 1989.
