For nearly two decades in Dallas, a strange, winged elephant creature could be found on car windows, billboards, and the t-shirts of self-proclaimed “Zoo Freaks.” The creature was part of the logo for Dallas radio station KZEW, a station that provided the rock ’n’ roll soundtrack for a generation of locals in the post-Woodstock '70s. KZEW was a pioneer on the FM dial when there were few rockin' FM stations and those that did exist played out tranquilizing music for doctors’ offices. Life at KZEW was a zoo in itself. It was kind of like the Smothers Brothers on LSD had taken over a major broadcast facility, right in the heart of the Bible Belt. The jocks let loose with a diverse blend of rock music and didn't make use of a rigid playlist.

WQXM 97.9 was a 56,000-watt FM stereo radio station that went on the air in December 1967 from studios at the tower site at 8320 Starkey Road in Seminole. The station was owned by FM Enterprises. Inc., and initially aired a classical music format, which was dropped in 1969 to make way for an elevator music format promoted as Stereo 98. A new transmitter boosted power to 100,000 watts in 1973. Plough Broadcasting acquired WQXM in 1975 and a few years later, the elevator music format was out, an AOR format was in, and the station was rebranded as 98 Rock. This design comes from the 1980 brand update, which was a common sight throughout the Clearwater/Tampa area on billboards and bumper stickers.

WASH evolved from experimental FM station, W3XL, which was first licensed in September 1945 in Kansas City, and later moved to Washington, D.C. WASH debuted as Washington's second commercial FM station on December 17, 1946, initially relaying Overseas Service programming and broadcasting thrice-daily time signals while building their studio. In 1968, Metromedia acquired the station, trading news for an adult contemporary format. In the early '80s, the station attempted to do a Top 40/CHR format, publicized with a rather strange "WASH with the Stars" advertising campaign. After a few years with little success against D.C.'s established Top 40 stations, WASH returned to a full service adult contemporary format.

Remembering great WCFL radio station in Chciago, Illinois. Originally founded by the Chicago Federation of Labor, thus the call letters, by the 1960's it was a Top 40 rock and roll station. WCFL had wonderful disc jockeys included Jim Runyon, Joel Sebastian, Dick Williamson, Jim Stagg, Ron Britain, Barney Pip, Ron Riley, Jerry G Bishop (who was also The Ghoul on TV), and the legendary Dick Biondi.

KMET was a Los Angeles FM station that broadcast at 94.7 MHz beginning in June 1968. As with many stations at the time, KMET featured an automated format with female voices and middle-of-the-road music, but eventually added live DJ's and a free form rock music format. Major changes came about in 1974 to create something new for the struggling station by way of a new rock format that retained some of the station's progressive freedom, but added much needed energy and consistency along with high production values. KMET's new format quickly rose to number one, earning them the nickname "The Mighty Met." The station continued to rock the valley through the '70s and most of the '80 before signing off on February 14, 1987.
