Subatomic particle tracks. Photograph from the 4.6 metre (15-foot) bubble chamber at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) near Chicago. The bubble chamber was filled with liquid hydrogen & subjected to a beam of neutrinos. The neutrinos are electrically neutral & so do not produce tracks themselves, but one of them has interacted with a proton in the bubble chamber's liquid, producing the spray of charged particle tracks that shoots up from the bottom of the picture. These particles bend & curl in the bubble chamber's powerful magnetic field. The white arc at top right is part of the bubble chamber's structure. Photograph taken in 1984.

Subatomic Insect Man!

Simulated detection of Higgs boson. Computer simulation of an event in which the decay of a Higgs boson produces four muons (white tracks). The muons, along with countless other particles (yellow tracks and red dots), are produced in a head-on collision between two protons. The Higgs boson is a localised clustering in the Higgs field that permeates space; local distortions of the field are thought to be the way that particles gain mass. This image shows how the Higgs boson might be seen in the CMS detector on the Large Hadron Collider, which is due to start operation at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory outside Geneva, in 2007-2009.

First observation of omega-minus particle. In this historic photograph from the 80-inch (200cm) bubble chamber at the Brookhaven National Laborat- ory. A negative kaon enters at bottom left & collides with a proton in the chamber's hydrogen to produce 3 particles, including the omega-minus, which consists of three strange quarks. The omega stravels a short distance before decaying into a negative pion, which veers to the right across the bottom part of the picture, & a neutral xi particle which leaves no track. Discovery of the omega in 1964 confirmed Murray Gell-Mann & Yuval Ne'eman's classification of subatomic particles, the "Eightfold Way".

Subatomic particle tracks. Coloured bubble chamber photograph showing tracks left by subatomic particles from a particle accelerator at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory at Geneva. A bubble chamber is a container filled with liquid hydrogen which is superheated - momentarily raised above its normal boiling point by a sudden drop in pressure in the container. Any charged particle passing through the liquid in this state leaves behind a trail of tiny bubbles as the liquid boils in its wake. The bubbles are seen as fine tracks, which show the characteristic paths of different types of particle and which are curved due to an intense applied magnetic field.

The discovery photograph of the positron, the positive version of the electron & the first antimatter particle to be discovered. The cloud chamber photo was taken in 1932 by US physicist Carl Anderson. It shows the track of a positive particle that enters the chamber from below. The particle is known to be positive because of the way it bends in the chamber's magnetic field; & it is proved to be moving up the picture because it loses energy & curves more in the magnetic field after traversing the 6 mm thick lead plate in the middle. But the track is too faint to be caused by a proton; it was exactly like an electron's track; it had to be the predicted positron.

Sometimes don't you feel a bit under the weather, like no one cares about you and only talk about your proton and electron homies. Or is that just a neutron atom issue?
