Financial difficulties lead Holmes and Dr. Watson to share rooms together at 221B Baker Street, London. Their residence is maintained by their landlady, Mrs. Hudson. Holmes works as a detective for twenty-three years, with Watson assisting him for seventeen of those years. Most of the stories are frame narratives written from Watson's point of view, as summaries of the detective's most interesting cases. Holmes frequently calls Watson's records of Holmes's cases sensational and populist, suggesting that they fail to accurately and objectively report the "science" of his craft."

221b Baker Street is where Sherlock resides. Trivia - When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote it there were only 100 houses in in the street. So the 221B number was a fiction. But it is very much a reality now in persent day London. There was a bank in the address which wrote back to all the fan letters. Now there is a Sherlock Museum.

This statue of Sherlock Holmes was created by the sculptor John Doubleday. It stands near the supposed site of 221B Baker Street, the fictional detective's address in London. The statue was installed outside Baker Street tube station, on Marylebone Road.

In a radio interview Rathbone recalled that Twentieth Century-Fox producer and director Gene Markey, lunching with producer-director-actor Gregory Ratoff and 20th Century-Fox mogul Daryl Zanuck at Lucey's Restaurant in Hollywood, proposed a film version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles. When asked who could possibly play Holmes, Markey incredulously replied, "Who?! Basil Rathbone!" An English actor widely considered to be the definitive Holmes of his era. Basil Rathbone’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes is so empowering and inspirational for both children and adults on film.
