First constituted on 8 April 1967 in the Regular Army as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 8th Military Police Group. The unit was activated on 26 July 1967 at Fort Riley, Kansas. It was inactivated on 18 December 1967 at Fort Riley, Kansas. The unit was reactivated on 24 August 1968 in Vietnam. It was formed as part of the 18th Military Police Brigade in Vietnam to provide greater command and control purposes. It was reorganized and redesignated on 22 January 1970 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 8th Military Police Group. It was inactivated on 1 July 1972 in Vietnam. While in Vietnam, it participated in 10 campaigns of the conflict: Counteroffensive Phase V, Counteroffensive Phase VI, Tet 69.

The primary mission of the 8th Special Forces Group (Airborne) [(SFG(A)] was counter-insurgency training for the armies of Latin America. Some training was performed under the sponsorship of the School of the Americas, also located at Fort Gulick.

The 716th Military Police Battalion is a military police battalion of the United States Army based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. It is a subordinate unit of the 16th Military Police Brigade. The battalion is subordinate to the 16th Military Police Brigade. It is headquartered at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Company C, 52nd Infantry Regiment arrived in South Vietnam on 1 December 1966 and was assigned to the battalion. By late 1967 the battalion's mission was security and law enforcement in the Saigon/Cholon/Tan Son Nhut metropolitan area, South Vietnam. Specific security missions, involving approximately 83% of the military police/security guard resources of the battalion, included US Embassy, the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV).

After Vietnam, the Brigade deployed units to several other operations, namely Operation Desert Storm and Operation Provide Comfort. The brigade itself also deployed to Kosovo.

As of 2010, the group consisted of 4 battalions located at Fort Benning, Georgia; Fort Campbell, Kentucky; and Fort Myer, Virginia, as well as the only airborne battalion in CID at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The 6th Military Police Group (CID), headquartered in Fort Lewis, Washington, supports commanders by conducting criminal investigations of serious, sensitive or special interest matters; preventing crime; preserving the force and Army resources in peacetime, combat and contingency operations throughout the group's area of operations.
