Named Gadir by the Phoencians, who founded their trading post in 1100 BC, it was later controlled by the Carthaginians, until it became a thriving Roman port. It sank into oblivion under the Visigoths and Moors, but attained great splendour in the early 16th century as a launching point for the journey to the newly discovered lands of America. Cadiz was later raided by Sir Francis Drake, in the struggle to gain control of trade with the New World, and managed to withstand a siege by Napoleon's army. Nikon D5200; lens: AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm The morning light shining on the nets intended to deter the pigeons from nesting, gave the interior of Cadiz Cathedral a slightly eerie look. The church, built between 1722 and 1838 was known as "The Cathedral of The Americas" because it was built with money from the trade between Spain and America and was designed by the architect Vicente Acero, who had also built the Granada Cathedral. Acero left the project and was succeeded by several other architects. As a result, this largely baroque-style cathedral was built over a period of 116 years, and, due to this drawn-out period of construction, the cathedral underwent several major changes to its original design. Rooftops of Cádiz, May 2022 The Spanish city of Cadiz (Andalusia, Spain) is remarkable in that it is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in western Europe. The city was founded by the Phoenicians and is built on a narrow strip of coastal land roughly midway between Gibraltar and the Portuguese border.
