The Mausoleum of Hadrian, usually known as Castel Sant'Angelo (English: Castle of the Holy Angel), is a towering cylindrical building in Parco Adriano, Rome, Italy around 130 AD. It was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. The building was later used by the popes as a fortress and castle, and is now a museum. The Castel was once the tallest building in Rome. In the third act of his opera 'Tosca' Puccini chose this site for his heroine's death.

Castel Nuovo and the Civic Museum in Naples Italy. This castle also known as Maschio Angioino, was built between 1279 and 1282 by Charles of Anjou. Later the castle was completely changed by Alfonso of Aragon in the 15th century. It is located at Naples Harbour. Its 3 dark towers were built from lava stones of Mount Vesuvius. The Chapel of St Barbara, originally decorated by Maso di Baco, remains from the French period. At the entrance of the castle is the magnificent Arch of Triumph, built to commemorate the Aragonese victory. The castle houses the Civic Museum which contains 15th and 20th century paintings and sculptures primarily from Neapolitan churches.

The Castel Toblino is a rare example of a lake castle. Located in the Valley of Lakes between Padergnone and Sarche di Calavino in the municipal territory, in the province of Trento (Italy) The castle is perched on a small peninsula bathed and protected from the Lake. The square shape of the complex is one of the signs of greater interest in the great tower of circular shape, certainly the most obvious of Medieval pre-existences. The wide crenellated walls surrounding the entire complex and the large park surrounding the house adds another distinctive character. Currently the castle is private property and is used as a restaurant.

The splendid fortress of Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, Italy, was originally built as a Mausoleum for the Emperor Hadrian in 139 AD. In the 10th century AD it was transformed into a castle, then, 500 years later, into the elegant residence of Pope Alexander VI Borgia. Michelangelo designed the marvellous main court for Pope Leon X and many of the rooms inside are decorated with frescoes of great beauty. It's also been used to house prisoners, including the sculptor Benvenuto Cellini. The terrace offers a fine view of the river Tiber and opera lovers will know that this was where the final act of Puccini's opera "Tosca" took place.
