Walking along the Rheinsteig between Rüdesheim and Assmanshausen, I came across this little castle. The whole thing -- the forest, the castle, the Rhine below -- felt like it was out of a fairytale.

Hard to believe that this was once one of the most powerful castles in England - it was begun by Robert D'Oilly in 1067 on the orders of Wiliam I to control the Thames Valley. Over the years is was expanded and became a royal residence as well as fortress. During the Civil War of the 1100s, Matilda took refuge here. from King Stephen's armies. After the Civil War of the 1600s, it was 'slighted' or partially destroyed by Parliamentary troops.

Built in the C11th as an outer London fortification, by William I, it was Henry i (1068-1135) who started to use it as a residence. In the mist filled distance, tree covered hills rise into the dark cloudy sky. Upon one of these, almost lost in the fog rests a great castle with pointed spires. Inspired by the works of the Hudson River School and Albert Bierstadt as well as long hours of playing Skyrim.

This is a view across upper Teesdale, near Barnard Castle in County Durham, North-East England. It was produced from my photograph of an autumn view with a dusting of early snow on the fell-tops, in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Arendelle is the central location of the Frozen franchise. It is a Norwegian-inspired kingdom, and the birthplace of Anna and Elsa. The founder of Arendelle was Lord Aren (as named in the midquel novel "Forest of Shadows"). The companion novel "Frozen II: Dangerous Secrets" also lists King Eric and Queen Else as ancestors of King Runeard, who was married to Queen Rita.

Chateau D'Azay-Le-Rideau in the Loire Valley of France, built between 1518 and 1527. The Castle of Azay-le-Rideau was built on an island in the Indre River under the patronage of King Francis the First. A subtle blend of French tradition and innovative Italian decor, it is an icon of the new art of building in the Loire Valley in the 16th century. Its successive owners have made it the most architecturally harmonious treasure in the Loire Valley.
