This 5" x 7" original collage was constructed of hand cut and hand assembled vintage images and ephemera and is accented with dresden trim, culled print and sparkling crystals. The Flapper is an illustration by Frank Xavier Leyendecker, the lesser-known of the two Leyendecker brothers, both of whom were extremely talented illustrators. The image form suggests a young lady maturing into adulthood during the jazz age with her provocative clothing and bright colors providing notional rejection of the conservative mores of behavior and dress that a 'proper' young lady of the time was supposed to adhere to. This particular piece was created as a cover for Life in 1922, but saw a resurgence in popularity as a poster in the '70s.

Despite an alcoholic father who left her family when she was still very young, and a mother who made a living by doing laundry, Constance Talmadge escaped her past and became one of the biggest stars of the silent film era. Her friend Anita Loos, who wrote many screenplays for her, appreciated her "humor and her irresponsible way of life." Imagery selected based on aesthetic and resolution, and modified to negate the imperfections of time.
