Fort Point, a fort constructed in 1861 to protect San Francisco, nestles under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransico, California, USA. The fort fulfilled its purpose: no enemy ever tried to approach the shores. The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the opening of the San Francisco Bay onto the Pacific Ocean. As part of both US Highway 101 and State Route 1, it connects the city of San Francisco on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula to Marin County. During the construction of the bridge, the fort was carefully preserved.

Fort Point, San Francisco is a Civil War fortification built to protecting the San Francisco Bay. Today Fort Point is a National Historic Site. The small Fort Point Lighthouse dwarfed by the steel arches of the bridge above.

When the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge began in 1933, a fog signal and small lighthouse was put into service. When the bridge was completed the lighthouse was no longer necessary. The iron lighthouse still remains atop Fort Point dwarf by the bridge’s south tower.

These huge guns at Fort Nepean, in Victoria, Australia, were put in place to protect the entrance to Port Phillip Bay and Melbourne. They are a relic of 2 World Wars. Invading warships beware!
