Maximum Overdrive

As the Earth crosses the tail of a comet, previously inanimate machines suddenly spring to life. Chaos sets in as machines of all kinds begin attacking humans. At the Dixie Boy Truck Stop in Wilmington, North Carolina, a small group of people hold up inside and do their best to plan their survival as the rabid machines swarm outside. This is the gist of 1986's horror comedy, Maximum Overdrive, which was set in and around the Dixie Boy Truck Stop and based on King's 1973 short story, Trucks.

Located just west of Texarkana, Texas right off of Interstate 30, Lone Star Truck Stop has been open around the clock since opening its doors in 1964. Maximum Overdrive is a 1986 American comedy horror film written and directed by S.King. The screenplay was inspired by and loosely based on King's short story "Trucks", which was included in the author's first collection of short stories, Night Shift, and follows the events after all machines (including cars, trucks, radios, drones, arcades, vending machines, etc.) go sentient when Earth crosses the tail of a comet, initiating a world-wide killing spree. Jerusalem's Lot, Maine (often shortened to 'Salem's Lot or just the Lot) is a fictional town and a part of writer Stephen King's fictional Maine topography. 'Salem's Lot has served as the setting for a number of his novels, novellas, and short stories. It first appeared in King's 1975 novel 'Salem's Lot, and has reappeared as late as his 2019 novel The Institute (see list below). The town is described as being located in Cumberland County, between (or including parts of) the towns of Falmouth, Windham, and Cumberland, near the southern part of the state about 10 miles north of Portland. A map on King's official website, though, places 'Salem's Lot considerably further north, approximately in Northwest Piscataquis.
