The Nauga was the 1960s mascot for the artificial leather brand Naugahyde. A marketing campaign of the 1960s and 1970s claimed that Naugahyde was obtained from the skin of an friendly monster called a "Nauga". The campaign emphasized that, unlike other animals, which must typically be slaughtered to obtain their hides, Naugas can shed their skin without harm to themselves.

Nauga monster

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, a furniture company created a fake leather product called Naugahyde. As promotional items, the gave away these little-stuffed animal monsters at trade shows to help promote their product. My father worked in sales and received several of these characters as gifts in a variety of colors. I had these all over my bedroom. They were my teddy bears. That probably explains a lot actually.
