Tribute to my Pentax K-5 photo machine (10 years and still working)

You need imagination in photography. This design represents the imagination flowing through your camera. Use your inspiration to achieve greatness. Use colour or the lack of it. Your DSLR or whatever gear you have is not limiting you. Your imagination is your only limit. Travel the world and seek love.

It just so happens that after being out on an early shoot with Camera Club to Moelfre that this evening's shoot was less prepared than I thought... I had forgotten to take along with me some filters... So this evening's shoot was using natural light and low exposure... I was shooting with a very fast lens an f/1.4 'nifty fifty' as they say in the business - a Super Takumar by Pentax... A lovely piece of glass made in the 60's and despite its slight radioactivity, some photographers claim this lens is one of the finest ever made, and use it as one of their favourites... It has garnered a legendary reputation online, and is known for its sharpness, bokeh, and propensity for flare... so I thought I'd work with this flare and see what I c...

You may recognize the title of this image as lyrics from America's 1970's song, A Horse With No Name. I thought this was apropos, given the variety of shapes found in this image. This was taken in an area of Nevada known as Little Finland, with a Pentax 645Z and FA-645 45-85mm, hand held. Also available in Black And White on this site.

I took this shot during an exercise at a photography workshop that I attended in 2008. It was great fun and it kicked off even more of a photography obsession!

I love being able to have lazy weekends at Brisbane's South Bank in the summer, wandering through markets, sitting next to the (fake) beach reading a book, and yes, looking up at the Wheel of Brisbane.

As I planted my tripod legs to take this photo, I thought "This looks like a view to another time". The view through the hole in the rocks, like a window to another world, with the red/orange rocks and red/purple hills in the distance, was so bizarre. It's like looking into a Jurassic world. :-) This is Little Finland, Nevada. Shot with a Pentax 645Z and FA-645 45-85mm.

Standing on the Point Buchon Trail, which is south of Montana de Oro State Park on the coast of central California, I observed this flock of pelicans flying low over a point called Disney Lookout, or Fat Point. Looking closely, one can count 19 birds in the photo, making it appear as though they're racing. Point Buchon Trail is on PG&E property, so a reservation is necessary to hike there. North Tamborine graveyard -- a spooky but very fun place to spend Halloween!

In 2009, I spent Halloween night in Tamborine Mountain Cemetery with the Bluedog crew. This shot was a long exposure where the werewolf jumped in and was light painted after about a minute (there's no photoshopping involved). A pretty creepy effect, huh, especially considering the date!

Happy Halloween! This was shot in Tamborine Mountain Cemetery on a very spooky (and very fun) Halloween a few years ago. Only slight adjustments done in Photoshop -- the ghost effect was done in camera.

This is from an expedition to O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat in Lamington National Park, about a 2 hour drive from Brisbane. I ended up doing part of the "Border Track" and eventually stumbled upon this gem--Elabana Falls.

This shot of Morro Bay was taken from the hills above Montana De Oro State Park, south of the bay, as the overcast sky was breaking up. The three smoke stacks to the right of Morro Rock are part of the power plant, which was closed in February, 2014. Photographed in May, 2015, with a Pentax 645Z.

When you make plans to visit the Grand Canyon, always plan on more than one day. You never know what sort of weather you might encounter. This is a view from Point Imperial taken in August, 2014. There were lightning storms the day before, and a beautiful sunset. It rained all night and in the morning the entire canyon was filled with one big cloud. The cloud didn't start to lift until after 4PM. Those that stopped by for a day trip were awfully disappointed. I didn't think I'd get any good shots on the hike on the Point Imperial trail, and didn't want to get water in the lenses of my new 645Z, so I took my trusty Pentax MX-1, and got some good shots anyway. I like the silhouette of the rocks and the lone pine, looking like a Chr...

My Danbos arrived! For those that don't know, Danbo is a character in the manga Yotsuba&! that Amazon decided to adopt as its unofficial mascot in Japan. The figures are absolutely adorable! Little Danbo needs to learn about the world from his mother, so where else to start but with Apple? :-P

This is a view of Waipio Bay, on the Big Island of Hawaii, as a storm passed by. I like that I was able to get a glimmer of sunlight on the hills of the Kohala Forrest Reserve across the Waipio Valley. And the speck above the cliffs isn't dirt on the lens. Look closely and you'll notice it's a dragonfly that was hovering around as I photographed. No doubt it was feeding on the mosquitoes, which had been feeding on me the whole trip. Now that's life in the food chain. Taken in May, 2012, with a Pentax K5.

Hummingbirds are very territorial. I am frequently dive-bombed in the morning as I set up a camera for the day's work. This is a composite of four images of a female Allen's Hummingbird guarding her Zinnia. They were all taken on a calm and somewhat overcast October morning, within 50 minutes of each other, so the background and Zinnia were easily aligned. All the images were taken with a Pentax K-50 with a 1980's vintage, manual focus 70-210mm macro zoom, set to 150mm, f11, 1/1600s and ISO 3200 and 6400. This image has been submitted to the Los Angeles Center For Digital Art for their 2016 International Juried Digital Art and Photography Competition.

Unless you're a local, McWay Falls, in Big Sur California, can be difficult to get an ideal photo of. On this stop in late January 2015, it had been overcast all day. I'd hoped to get a ray of sun hitting the falls at sunset, but the clouds didn't cooperate. Instead, I came away with this shot, after the sun went down. The exposure was 4 seconds, giving the waves in McWay Cove a soupy look, which I kinda like. Shot with a Pentax 645Z, 45mm, f16.

A lone spectator contemplates the beauty that is the Grand Canyon, in this view from Bright Angel Point. The gray off in the distance is, as told by a ranger, 3 fires started by lightning the evening before. This was taken around 10 AM on August 11, 2014. By 1:30 PM the monsoon storms reformed and doused the flames. The following day the entire canyon was filled with clouds, disappointing many tourists that stopped by for only one day. This image was made from 11 stitched shots from a Pentax 645Z.

It was great to be home and seeing my family for the first time in 14 months. My cat did not seem to agree. This was the animal that used to cuddle and sleep on my bed. She has always had a bit of psychosis, but it seems to have gotten worse as she's aged. She did this just because I spoke near her. By the way, we named her Angel when we got her as a kitten; she now reminds me much more of Satan.

This is a second view of a lightning strike on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, in Arizona. The previous view can be seen elsewhere on this site, in color. This was taken with a second camera, with a longer focal length, and converted to black and white, just to be a little different. Shot with a Pentax K-3.

These water dragons are everywhere in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens--there are apparently so many that there's a monument to them! You can see them lounging in the grass, on tree trunks, on the shores of small ponds, and in the middle of every sidewalk there. If you get too close, most skitter away (with the funniest run I've ever seen on a reptile), but this one seemed content to just pose and slowly nose closer to the camera. Unfortunately he only posed for split seconds, which is why there's a bit of motion blur around his body!

Just for a moment in the silence, time stood still. The cool water of the creek glistens beyond the sunlit seed pods and in that silent moment in time, your worries are lifted and drift away, all that remains is the simple beauty of nature. Gila National Forest, New Mexico.
