Dunkeld, the fort of the Celts, played a vital role in the early history of Scotland, both as a Royal and Religious centre. It was the original seat of the chief bishop of the mysterious kingdom of the Picts; Scotland's first king, Kenneth MacAlpin, built a stone church here early in the 9th century to house the relics of St Columba; and under King David I it was the centre of Christianity in all of Scotland. The present building was constructed between 1315 and 1501. The cathedral was plundered by the Vikings, and vandalized by the stern followers of the Reformation. In the centre of Birnam, Perthshire, Scotland, is St Mary's Church, complete with its clock tower. The church was built in 1858 and is set in its own well cared for churchyard. The clock tower was added in 1883. Windows in the church are by a number of different designers, including William Morris. Situated on the banks of the River Tay, the conservation village of Birnam is home to the Birnam Oak, the last remaining example of Birnam Wood so famous from Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Wade's bridge at Aberfeldy, Highland Perthshire, Scotland Built-in 1733 Wade's Bridge crosses the River Tay on the northwest side of Aberfeldy on the Weem/Kenmore road. It is one of over 40 bridges built in the Highlands between 1726 and 1735 as part of General Wade's road construction 'for securing a safe and easy communication between the highlands and the trading towns of the low country' as the inscription on the bridge reads.
