Most people are afraid of death - this is normal. Since ancient times, folks have used amulets with the death-attributes to cheat death. Often, bird skulls were used for this purpose - Death will come nearer, but when he sees the skull, will think that he has been here before, job is done, will turn around and leave. Death drives death out! Rune Algiz, similar to a bird's paw, was used as a protection too.

The raven have been an important symbol in pagan mythology in many parts of the world. In Norse mythology the two ravens, Hugin and Munin, where believed to part of Odin, the God of knowledge, war and death. Hugin and Munin would fly around the world and gather information and knowledge and they would also help the Valkyries to decide which fallen warriors that would be chosen to enter Valhalla. This was believed to be the reason why soldiers would see gatherings of ravens above battlefields.

A large raven holds a golden key, to what, we don't know, as he stands perched atop a small pile of rocks in which is embedded a skull. This raven and key graphic began with my own original marker drawing.
