Brush Tailed, Yellow-footed and Black-footed Rock Wallabies.

The Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby is one of the prettiest - and one of the most endangered - wallaby species in Australia. A care program at Arkaroola has kept a population alive and growing, which would have died out due to drought without help.

This yellow footed rock wallaby looks surprised to see me. Taken at Arkaroola in outback South Australia on a recent photography tour I had the pleasure of hosting.

The brush-tailed rock-wallaby can be found in fragmented populations roughly following the Great Dividing Range from southeast Queensland to Western Victoria's Grampians. They live on rocky escarpments, granite outcrops and cliffs, which have caves and ledges for shelter and face north for warmth. They graze on native grasses found in surrounding habitat at dawn and dusk. They also feed on the foliage and fruits of shrubs and trees as well as roots and bark. They are medium-sized wallabies with the adults ranging from six to eight kilograms. They are very agile, moving confidently and swiftly around their rocky habitat using their long, thickly furred tail for balance and padded feet for grip. Photo taken at Taronga Zoo, Sydney.

The allied rock-wallaby is endemic to Queensland in Australia. Its range extends from Townsville to the Burdekin River, the Bowen River, Croydon and Hughenden, and includes Magnetic and Palm Islands. It occurs at elevations of up to 1,000 m (3,300 ft) in rocky areas, both in woodland and in more lightly-treed areas, even when agricultural land is nearby. Typical habitat is mountainous areas with cliffs, ledges, caves and rock piles.

Brush Tailed Rock Wallabies are rare and endangered Australian animals. Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria, Australia, has a healthy colony and has just finished an extended area for them, which allows visitors to get close to these beautiful creatures. This little female hopped up onto a new bench to get a better view.
