Shakyamuni Pins and Buttons

Commissioned by the Qing imperial court, this stunning 18th-century embroidery hanging features Tibetan-style Buddhist images. The large central Buddha sits on a lotus throne carried by lions, with his right hand in earth-touching mudra and his left in meditation mudra. The two small figures in front are the Buddha’s primary disciples: the youthful Ananda and the older Kashyapa. At the top, Tsongkhapa (1357–1419), the founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, is joined by two disciples. The uncommonly delicate embroidery successfully displays the solemnity of the Buddha and the piety of his disciples.

This ancient 16th-century painting depicts a rare subject in Tibetan art, the life of Buddha Shakyamuni and his previous incarnations as told in the Jataka tales. These stories form an essential component of Buddhist cosmology. This tangka has a Chinese inscription dating the work to the reign of the Wanli emperor (r. 1573–1619) of the Ming dynasty as well as Tibetan glosses identifying the scenes depicted. The glosses indicate that this tangka was made for a Tibetan client. Depicted around the central icon of a radiant Buddha is a series of scenes, each with mountains and monastic buildings serving as scene dividers. Both Jatakas depicted recount the bodhisattva’s self-sacrifice.

In this vintage 17th-century tangka, Buddha Shakyamuni holds a begging bowl and gestures to the earth to witness his awakening. His golden complexion evokes his transcendent nature, and the patchwork robe indicates his non-attachment. He meditates upon a radiating lotus and is attended by the adoring figures of the bodhisattvas Maitreya (holding a flask) and Manjushri (a sword). Shakyamuni’s status as a cosmic Buddha is indicated by the rows of Buddhas that occupy the upper registers and the sixteen arhats that surround the lotus throne. In the lowest register are three seated monks flanked by the four guardian kings (lokapala).
