A hidden corner that hugs the Water of Leith, on my way to the Botanical Gardens. A day of glorious Scottish sunshine, of a clear blue sky and gentle warmth. The stone radiates gold, brilliant white from the woodwork, with dots of yellow from sunflowers. It is quiet here, with Stockbridge a short walk away. Where the New Town starts to end and Stockbridge approaches, where the hills are steep and the shadows long, I noticed the beautiful play of light and colour on this golden building. It was a perfect design of symmetry, Georgian, solid, with fan windows over the doors, and built of large blocks of stone. It was a perfect Edinburgh morning, a day of Scottish summer promised and delivered, the air tinged with pine and heather and brine. I wanted to capture that light. The work is rich in colour and in detail, laced with a strong realism and solidity that make it a perfect souvenir of Scotland, an ideal gift.

Every morning, as a child, on those special visits to granny’s flat in Edinburgh, my father and I trudged down the long hill to Stockbridge where a newsagent had a plastic covered tray of fluffy Scottish breakfast rolls. On the way back we often turned through Ann Street. It has always been the prettiest of streets, the preserve of the lettered, of judges perhaps. It is so pretty it is rumoured to be behind the design on a chocolate box. The air is redolent of honeysuckle, of roses and lilac.

A special place, laden with memory. I remember coming here as a child, peeking at the marble counters, at the macabre dead fish, their eyes glazed, silent and still. Scottish voices, banter and jokes, packages of brown paper, the smell of fish. Later my mother would cook the orange-coloured fish in milk, served with a poached egg. Little has changed, the floors, the walls, a link to my past. I was struck by the light too, the way it bounced off the wall, angular, cheering.

According to tradition, St. Bernard's Well near Stockbridge in Edinburgh, Scotland was re-discovered by three Heriot's school boys while fishing in the Water of Leith in 1760. Legend has it that it was originally discovered by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, the founder of the Cistercian Order, in the 12th Century. After being poorly received at court, and suffering from a sickness, he went to live in a cave near the Water of Leith. There, he found the spring and drank its healing waters until his strength returned. Chemical analysis revealed that the water was similar to the sulphur springs at Harrogate in Yorkshire. In September 1760 the mineral spring was covered by a small wellhouse.
