Tibetan Buddhism Pins and Buttons

Commissioned by the Qing imperial court, this stunning 18th-century embroidery hanging features Tibetan-style Buddhist images. The large central Buddha sits on a lotus throne carried by lions, with his right hand in earth-touching mudra and his left in meditation mudra. The two small figures in front are the Buddha’s primary disciples: the youthful Ananda and the older Kashyapa. At the top, Tsongkhapa (1357–1419), the founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, is joined by two disciples. The uncommonly delicate embroidery successfully displays the solemnity of the Buddha and the piety of his disciples.

Ancient 11th-century Tibetan image of Buddha Amitayus attended by Bodhisattvas. The cult of Amitayus, the Buddha of Eternal Life, was popular in Tibet, where his followers believed that devotion to this Buddha would prolong life. In this 11th-century painting, Amitayus is shown holding a jar containing the elixir of immortality, amrita, in his lap. He is richly bejeweled and has a golden complexion, creating radiance appropriate to his transcendent nature. He mediates in a heavenly assembly of bodhisattvas, flanked by two standing bodhisattvas typical of medieval eastern Indian art and an array of seated bodhisattvas who receive his doctrine. The seven figures in the uppermost register are monastic-robed hierarchs.

When hiking at 17,000 ft around Mount Amnye Machen in Amdo Tibet, a monk encouraged me with this phrase when the altitude took its toll. No matter what we face in life, if we can just take the next step forward, no matter how small, that's progress.

This ancient 16th-century painting depicts a rare subject in Tibetan art, the life of Buddha Shakyamuni and his previous incarnations as told in the Jataka tales. These stories form an essential component of Buddhist cosmology. This tangka has a Chinese inscription dating the work to the reign of the Wanli emperor (r. 1573–1619) of the Ming dynasty as well as Tibetan glosses identifying the scenes depicted. The glosses indicate that this tangka was made for a Tibetan client. Depicted around the central icon of a radiant Buddha is a series of scenes, each with mountains and monastic buildings serving as scene dividers. Both Jatakas depicted recount the bodhisattva’s self-sacrifice.

Ancient 14th-century Tibetan tangka with mandala of Jnanadakini. The central six-armed goddess (devi), Jnanadakini, is surrounded by eight emanations—representations of the devi that correspond to the colors of the mandala’s four directional quadrants. Four additional protective goddesses sit within the gateways. Surrounding the mandala are concentric circles that contain lotus petals, vajras, flames, and the eight great burial grounds. Additional dakinis and lamas occupy roundels in the corners. The upper register depicts lamas and mahasiddhas representing the Sakya school’s spiritual lineage. The lower register depicts protective deities and a monk who performs a consecration ritual.

Ancient 12th-century Buddhist thangka from Kadampa Monastery (Central Tibet). Ratnasambhava, the Buddha that presides over the southern direction, is one of the Buddhas of the Five Families, each associated with a cardinal direction. Jina – meaning victorious was a title more often used for spiritual masters of Tīrthaṅkaras from the Jaina tradition. But the title was also used for Dhyani Buddhas in the Vajrayana tradition.

There are numerous forms of the goddess Marici. Shown here is a heavenly maiden of Marici as depicted according to the tenth century canon; the Exalted Bodhisattva Molizhitian. She is notably a deity associates with success and victory. She has the power to withdraw and eliminate calamity. She travels in front of the sun 365 days a year and vowed to protect dharma disciples day and night.

The Endless Knot is one of Eight Auspicious symbols used in Tibetan Buddhism. and represents the endless cycles of birth, life, death and rebirth in the realms of samsara, as well as the union of wisdom and bliss (compassion) in sacred teachings.
