A beautiful town bridge

The Town Bridge, or as it is known locally, The Water Bridge, crossing the Kennet and Avon Canal in the centre of Newbury, Berkshire. The River Kennet was made navigable from Reading to Newbury in the early 1700s under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury, work commencing in 1718. It was extended further west to Hungerford in 1798. The bridge probably dates from this period. The canal was finally opened to connect with Bristol in 1810.

*Town Bridge, Aberaeron, February 2020* The Town Bridge at Aberaeron (Ceredigion, West Wales) is a wooden structure which allows pedestrians to cross the River Aeron from the north side of town to the south. Date: 20th February 2020.

The Windsor Town Bridge crossing the River Thames, linking Windsor and Eton in Berkshire, England. River transport was always important here particularly with the royal palace at Windsor. There has been a bridge on this site since at least the C12th when records show tolls of the equivalent of £4.33 being paid to a landowner, Osbert de Bray, for boats passing beneath the bridge. The present bridge with cast iron arches was opened in 1824. In 1970 it was made pedestrian only as it was now too weak for heavy traffic. Even pedesrian traffic took its toll on the structure so it was refurbished and reopened by the Queen in June 2002. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The town bridge that carries Welsh Row traffic over the River Weaver in Nantwich looks particularly good with the intense green of the trees. It gives a feel good factor and sense of calm and stability in these strange times. It was built in 1803.

The bridge

Looking across the River Thames at Wallingford in Oxfordshire, England towards the town. This bridge links Wallingford with Crowmarsh Gifford. A bridge was first mentioned in 1141 when King Stephen besieged the castle. However, the first stone bridge was built slightly later and there are apparently elements of this medieval structure in the bridge we see now! Across the river we can see the spire of St Peter's Church dating from 1776-7, a local landmark. This image captured on an autumn afternoon.

The bridge

Pulteney Bridge crosses the River Avon in Bath, England. It was completed by 1774, and connected the city with the newly built Georgian town of Bathwick. Designed by Robert Adam in a Palladian style, it is exceptional in having shops built across its full span on both sides.

Camden Town Bridge, London City, UK This iconic bridge in Camden Town really caught my eye and lets you know exactly where you are in London City. Camden Town is famed for its market, a warren of fashion and curiosities by the Regent’s Canal. A haven of counter culture, the area is popular with tourists, teenagers and punks. The thriving nightlife scene includes live music in alternative clubs and old-school pubs, and major stars playing at the Jazz Cafe and the Roundhouse. Cafes bustle during the day.
