After a long morning hike towards the bottom of one of the points at Zion National Park, I was greeted with this majestic view of the Virgin River beneath my feet and one of the tallest reddish and tan-colored Navajo Sandstone mountains in the park (situated by the North Fork of the Virgin River). As a photographer on a hike, I always want to see what's around the next bend or what's behind those dense bushes and how high can I climb that hill before I kill myself.... You get the idea. And when you're traveling with a camera in hand and a tripod in the other and a camera bag on your back that weighs a ton, it's not that easy to do any of the above. Well in this case I kept following the Virgin River along its winding path until I could go no more, unless I risk either getting really wet or getting really killed (LOL). One of the things I like "being there" is the ability to visit (or in this case, hike) the same area under different lighting conditions. I was fortunate enough to stay overnight in a motel very close to Zion National Park, which essentially allowed me to hike various spots at different times of the day - early morning, late morning, early afternoon, late afternoon, and into the night time. This is an image of the Checkerboard Mesa in Zion National Park, Utah. What a fanciful piece of natural sculpture. The wind, rain, and ice have etched into the rock a grid pattern. I suppose geologists could explain the process, but I expect it is weaknesses in the rock that have been exploited here. For all of that, it is fascinating to see.

The Angels Landing trail is 2.5 miles (5 miles round trip) from trailhead to the top with a 1,488 elevation change. Most people only make it to the 2 mile mark at Scout Lookout before turning around. The last 1/2 mile is when things get interesting and steep where the trail follows the ridge across a saddle and up the hogs back. Remember your amazing hike long after with this commemorative shirt.

Fangorn Forest was a forest beneath the southeastern Misty Mountains. It was known for being the last habitation of the Ents and Huorns. It was named after the oldest Ent, Fangorn (or Treebeard). It was also called Entwood by the Rohirrim.

We were leaving Zion National Park in Utah, driving the Zion Park Blvd., through the remarkable landscape that exists there. I have to say that the wind, rain, and ice have had a most delightful time in fashioning the sedimentary sandstone rock in the east of the park. In this image, the layers have tilted this way and that and with their very rounded edges they have taken on the appearance of a precariously assembled pile of pancakes. Among all of this, trees have found places to root and thrive. Oh, the majesty of nature.

The Misty Mountains, also named Hithaeglir, was a mountain range stretching 1280 kilometres (796 miles) from Mount Gundabad in the far north to Methedras in the south of Middle-earth, between Eriador and Rhovanion. An early version of these mountains' name was the Sindarin Ered Hithui.

The Jundland Wastes were a region of Tatooine, a desert planet located in the Outer Rim Territories. The Great Chott salt flat existed in the southeastern extreme of the Jundland Wastes. Black melons grew in the Jundland Wastes, providing Tusken Raiders with a reliable source of milk. Luke Skywalker was attacked by a group of Tusken Raiders led by A'Koba in the Jundland Wastes, before being rescued by Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The Watchman Trail is a three mile round trip trail ending at the Watchman Overlook in Zion National Park in Utah.
