The 2nd Battalion of the 11th Artillery Regiment ("Dragon Artillery") was a towed 155mm Howitzer Battalion at Dau Tieng which saw service first as part of II Field Force Vietnam Artillery and later with Task Force Oregon. It was deploued to Duc Pho on 19 April 1967, Bien Hoa in January 1968 and on 8 March 1968 to I CTZ and 23rd Artillery Group's control at Gia Le. On 10 June 1968 it was assigned to 101st Airborne Division.

In late 1965, the battalion was again deployed to Vietnam. During Operation Fishhook in October 1968, LTC Charles C. Rogers, the Battalion Commander, received the Medal of Honor for gallantry and leadership at Firebase Rita. The battalion won eleven campaign streamers for their actions in the Republic of Vietnam.

Not only was Gerold the first soldier from the 1st Infantry Division, known as the "Big Red One", he was also the first member of the 7th Artillery to set foot on Vietnamese soil. Even as he climbed from the plane, his comrades were loading aboard the USNS General W. H. Gordon for the trip to Vietnam. On 12 July, Charlie Battery of the 1st Battalion, 7th Artillery made landfall at Cam Ranh Bay, part of a taskforce with the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division. The M119 howitzer is the US designation for the L118 light gun, a lightweight British 105 mm howitzer also used by the United States Army. It can be easily airlifted by helicopter, or dropped by parachute. It does not need a recoil pit. The M119A1 fires all standard NATO semi-fixed ammunition as well as special rocket-assisted projectiles The M119 is towed in the US Army by the M1097 High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV).

The unit reactivated on 15 July 1947 at Fort Ord, California. It was reorganized and redesignated on 1 October 1963 as the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry. The 1st Battalion 8th Infantry won nine campaign streamers for action in Vietnam from 1966 to 1970, participating in operations Sam Houston, Francis Marion, Don Quin, and Paul Revere III. The Vietnamese government awarded the battalion the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm and the Civil Action Medal First Class. Alpha and Charlie Companies were awarded a cluster to their presidential unit citations for extraordinary heroism in the Republic of Vietnam. The 2-11 Arty arrived in Vietnam on 13 December 1966 and was initially assigned to II Field Forces and based at Dau Tieng. The battalion also served with Task Force Oregon and with the 23rd Artillery Group. In 1968 it was attached to the 101st Airborne Division. The 2-11 Arty participated in thirteen Vietnam campaigns receiving a Valorous Unit Award for Quang Ngai Province and two awards of the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. In 1967, the unit participated in Operations Cedar Falls and Junction City, earning the Meritorious Unit Commendation in the largest offensive operations in Vietnam to date. Four Papa One (4P1) just outside the DMZ was an artillery fire base. In Korea, 4P1 was the only combat fire base in the Army. There were five support batteries in the battalion, three were firing batteries using 105mm Howitzers.

The regiment served in World War I, World War II, and Korea, and regimental units have served in Vietnam, Panama and the Global War on Terror. Currently organized as a parent regiment under the U.S. Army Regimental System, the regiment's only active component is the 2nd Battalion, 8th Field Artillery Regiment, currently assigned to the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division and stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
