Caversham Bridge Posters and Art Prints

Just upstream from Caversham Bridge, swans regularly gather in the hope of food - which is always forthcoming! The bridge spans the River Thames linking Reading and Caversham. The first bridge here was built c1163. During the Civil War a skirmish on the bridge resulted in the Reading side being rebuilt with a wooden drawbridge. This was later painted on canvas by JMW Turner. The present bridge dates from 1926. Swans and geese are a feature here as they gather by the Reading Rowing Club boathouse

Caversham bridge, built in 1926, spanning the River Thames at Reading in Berkshire, England. It connects Reading with Caversham on the river's north bank. There has been a bridge here since the 1100s and in 1231 it is mentioned by Henry III who notes the presence of a chapel on the bridge on the side owned by William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke. The view standing on Caversham Bridge, Reading, looking downstream on a bright and sunny afternoon. On the left a boat is moored at Pipers Island - the third smallest named island on the Thames. A little further on is De Montfort Island or Fry's Island, the scene of a trial by combat between Robert de Montfort and Henry of Essex in 1163. We can also see The Blade, Reading's tallest office block and the tall towers of some new apartments by the railway station.

This is the scene just downstream from Caversham Bridge (in the background) linking the town centre of Reading with Caversham on the north bank. Houses, flats, offices and a few restaurants line the riverbanks here. The Thames was once the main route into Reading - particularly in medieval times when the large and powerful Reading Abbey was the centre of life and commerce. Now it's busy with leisure craft.
