As you walk up into the old city of Coimbra, you pass under this wonderful arch. It's curious that structures that were built centuries ago, and yet remain, must, I suppose, still be useful. In this instance, the utility must be in its undeniable charm. I hope you enjoy the image as much as I do.

This is a black-and-white image of the Rua Visconde da Luz, in Coimbra, on a warm September night. It was late in the season, so the throngs of tourists were thinning out, which made it all the more pleasant. The warm light of the street lighting, the casual way the people were strolling along the street, and the wonderful, geometric paving, to me, make this a delightful image. I hope you like it as well.

This image is of the medieval barbican gate to Coimbra. Through the gate are the old streets that wend their up through the old city. The evening was warm, and made to feel warmer because of the incandescent lighting. A thoroughly pleasant evening. I hope you also enjoy its warmth.

This image is of the cloister within the old Coimbra Cathedral. I have to say that I like the cloisters of these wonderful old cathedrals in Europe. They are peaceful places; they seem to instill a sense of tranquility.

Coimbra is a city and a municipality in Portugal. The population at the 2011 census was 143,397, in an area of 319.40 square kilometres (123.3 sq mi). The fourth-largest urban centre in Portugal (after Lisbon, Porto and Braga), it is the largest city of the district of Coimbra and the Centro Region. About 460,000 people live in the Região de Coimbra, comprising 19 municipalities and extending into an area of 4,336 square kilometres (1,674 sq mi). Among the many archaeological structures dating back to the Roman era, when Coimbra was the settlement of Aeminium, are its well-preserved aqueduct and cryptoporticus. Similarly, buildings from the period when Coimbra was the capital of Portugal (from 1131 to 1255) still remain.
