Crocodiles have vertical-slit shaped pupils, similar to domestic cats. One explanation for the evolution of slit pupils is that they exclude light more effectively than a circular pupil ~ helping to protect their eyes during daylight. Contrary to popular belief ~ at night ~ crocodiles are easily detected by their "eye shine" which is "red in colour". This is due to a nictitating membrane called the tapetum behind their retina, which contains crystals which reflect light and make possible the night vision.
