Foulger was a Blue Oval dealership on Huntington Drive in Monrovia, California and was one of the first dealerships to dive headfirst into drag racing, sponsoring several drag cars in the '60s and '70s. Their racing logo definitely reflected the times and their top competitors, most notably the 440 powered Plymouth Roadrunners.

The 429 was NOT simply a 1 (or 2) cubic inch larger version of the blue oval 427 & 428 engines. It was a totally new engine from a different engine family. This design was a departure from the paradigm, utilizing thin-wall casting methods and a skirtless block to reduce weight. The Super Cobra Jet, rated at 375 HP, had a 4-bolt main block, a Holley 780 cfm 4BBL carburetor, and a larger mechanical camshaft. It was only available with a 3.91 or 4.30 rear axle ratio. In 1971, the CJ engine also used a 4-bolt main block. However, these engines were actually derated and produced power in the 440–460 HP range. This was done to deceive insurance companies (common practice in that era), so that buyers did not have to pay higher insurance rates.

Ask any knowledgeable blue oval enthusiast to name the quickest pure-production Mustang of the muscle car era, and most will say the 1968 Cobra Jet. It was packing a power plant based on the staid 428-cid big-car engine, but had larger valve heads and the race-brewed 427's intake manifold. It also had ram-air induction and a hood scoop that funneled air directly into a 735-cfm four-barrel carburetor. Output was an easy 410hp, but the factory rated it at 335hp in an effort to calm insurance agents and con drag strip rules-makers.

For 1971, Ford's pony car featured bold new sheet metal and interior and chassis refinements, and it had grown. The front wheels were moved 1 inch forward, and the front track was increased 3 inches to more easily accept the 429 engines. The rear track was widened 2.5 inches, and the body was about 2.1 inches longer and 2.4 inches wider than the 1970 Mustangs. The Mach 1's base price of $3,268 included a 302-2V engine, three-speed manual transmission, Competition Suspension, and E70-14 Wide Oval tires. Exterior enhancements consisted of a color-keyed front bumper and fender and hood edge moldings, honeycomb-pattern grille with sport lamps added, non-functional hood scoops and dual color-keyed racing mirrors.
