The Palace of Westminster is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Commonly known as the Houses of Parliament after its tenants, the Palace lies on the Middlesex bank of the River Thames in the City of Westminster, in central London. Its name, which derives from the neighbouring Westminster Abbey, may refer to either of two structures: the Old Palace, a medieval building complex that was destroyed by fire in 1834, and its replacement New Palace that stands today. For ceremonial purposes, the palace retains its original style and status as a royal residence.

Victoria Tower, London, England. At the opposite end of the Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament) from the Clock Tower (Big Ben) is the Victoria Tower. The Tower holds the Parliamentary Archives. When the wrought iron flagstaff was put into position in 1855 the Tower was proudly claimed to be the largest and highest square tower in the world, 323 feet high to the base of the flagstaff and a further 72 feet to the top of the Crown at its summit. More accurately, at that point, considering the many bends in the river, it is technically the West bank. The landmark, photographed by most tourists visiting London, is brought fully to life by the warm late autumn light and the dark threatening clouds above. This set of conditions lasted but a few minutes. Being there is the only real skill. The Palace of Westminster, a painting I have wanted to do again, but different for a long time. 2 months to complete, and the inclusion of a London Bobby, my main occupation for 30 year, prior to becoming a full time artist. Westminster Bridge is a road-and-foot-traffic bridge over the River Thames in London, linking Westminster on the west side and Lambeth on the east side. Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London and is usually extended to refer to both the clock and the clock tower.
