He proclaims that sex and gender don’t matter; all that matters is that two people love each other. Nothing should stand in their way if they have love in their hearts. These words resonated with millions of people who felt like their emotions were invalid because of the gender of the object of their love. With this quote, Baldwin assured them that it didn’t matter because love is love.

Inspired by a famous protest sign that appeared at numerous LGBTQ+ liberation events in San Francisco. "Thank God I'm Gay" is a piece of queer history: It was printed in big block letters and often held next to religious protestors at Pride, at rallies for nondiscrimination bills, and at the front door of City Hall. Wording has been updated to be inclusive of more genders and orientations, but the spirit is the same: It's a blessing.

Annually, we celebrate LGBTQ PRIDE in June (the Stonewall Rebellion began June 28, 1969) and we celebrate and honor LGBTQ History in October (National Coming Out Day is October 11).
