Two years ago on St Patrick's Day, we were in for an absolute treat. A coronal mass ejection happened on the sun a few days prior, which meant massive auroras when it hit the Earth's atmosphere. I'm so glad that I booked in on a last-minute trip that took us to this hill in Kätkävaara, far out in the Finnish wilderness. There was no light pollution so we got to watch the amazing show until the guide forced us all back into the van! A solar storm on St Patrick's Day 2013 created auroras so strong over Finnish Lapland that they actually made the snow glow green! This was taken on a tour to Kätkävaara that I signed up for at the last minute in hopes of getting out of the city and really seeing the storm. I'm so glad I did! Merry Christmas

When we first hiked 400m up a hill in Kâtkâvaara, Finnish Lapland, to see the northern lights, our guide pointed out north and told us that was the direction the lights would come from. Then we turned south and saw this! The lights stretched from horizon to horizon that night…it was stunning.

The calm waters of the Kemijoki under the gorgeous, late-night skies of midsummer's eve. Rovaniemi was a great place to spend my first midsummer holiday!

Spring

Because there is supposed to be a massive geomagnetic storm hitting the earth's atmosphere today, here's a shot from a solar storm that I witnessed. This shot of the northern lights was taken as our guide was trying to shuttle us back down to the bus at the end of our tour. Luckily, we dug in our heels and asked if we could stay for just a few more minutes, since those minutes featured the most impressive auroras I've ever seen. They were moving so quickly across the sky, with coronas wildly pulsating above our heads, that I soon gave up taking photos and simply stared at it in awe. Inspired by airports

A bonfire burns on the shores of the Kemijoki in Rovaniemi in celebration of midsummer 2015. It was a perfect night for midsummer too; it was perfectly clear and warm (at least, for Lapland). I took this shot around 12.30am and the sun had only just dropped behind the hills after reflecting perfectly on the river.
