False color satellite image of melting ice at the north Canadian coast. This wetland is a sanctuary to many migratory bird species.

Caspian Sea, satellite image. North is at top. This saltwater lake lies between Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. It is the largest lake in the world, with a surface area of 371,000 square kilometres. Its main source of water is the Volga River, which flows into it through the Volga Delta (at its top left edge). The delta carries a large amount of sediment, which is responsible for the brown colour of the water in that region. On the eastern side of the sea, in Turkmenistan, is the shallow Garabogazkol (light blue), a highly salty lake separated from the Caspian Sea by a thin sandbar. This image was taken on 11th June 2005 by the MODIS instrument on the Aqua satellite.

Satellite Image

Cyanobacteria bloom. False-colour composite satellite image of what appears to be a large bloom of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) swirling in the Baltic Sea. Satellite images alone cannot say definitively that whether or not this bloom contains cyanobacteria - analysis of ocean water samples would be required to confirm it. Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic marine bacteria and an important constituent of plankton. Blooms like this flourish in the Baltic Sea during summertime, when there is ample sunlight and high levels of nutrients. They can cause an oxygen-depleted 'dead zone' where other organisms cannot survive. Imaged by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on the Landsat 8 satellite, on 11th August 2015.

Earth from space. Satellite image of the Earth during the day, centred over the Americas. Imaged by the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) instrument onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) weather satellite, on 22nd April 2013.

Burning Man festival, GeoEye-1 satellite image. This annual September event is held in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA. From a small event in 1986 it has grown to over 40,000 people in 2009. The attendees are housed in the temporary camp city seen here, with streets forming a curved grid pattern. Centre Camp is at left (circular) while the eponymous effigy burning area is at upper right. Image data obtained on 1 September 2009. The US-operated GeoEye-1 satellite was launched in September 2008, and orbits at a height of 680 kilometres. It is the world's highest resolution commercial Earth-imaging satellite.

Chile and Argentina, satellite image. North is at top. Chile is a long country which occupies the strip of land between the Pacific coast and the Andes mountains in the west of South America. Argentina extends east from Chile to the Atlantic coast. The border between Argentina and Chile follows the Andes mountain range. These mountains extend the entire length of western south America. The most southerly tip of South America, Cape Horn, lies within the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. The Falkland Islands lie further to the east, they are an oversees territory of the UK, although sovereignty is claimed by Argentina.

Korean Peninsula at night, satellite image. North is at top. The illuminations mark heavily populated areas with a high intensity of light emissions. South Korea has a high-density urban population, with the capital city of Seoul particularly prominent at centre. This contrasts markedly with North Korea (above South Korea), which has power shortages and frequent blackouts. The line of light on the border is the Korean Demilitarized Zone. The dot of light seen within North Korea, near its western coast, is the capital city of Pyongyang. At upper left are the lights of cities in China, and at bottom right the lights of cities on the southern islands of Japan.

Lake Lop Nur, China, satellite image. North is at top. This is a dry salt lake in Xinjiang Province. It used to be one of the largest salt lakes in China, but is now almost totally dry. The concentric rings show progressive evaporation of the lake, leaving behind salt deposits (white). Image data obtained on 13 August 1992.

Clouds (white) are seen, as are seas and oceans (blue). Land cover ranges from vegetation such as forests and grassy plains (green) to arid areas such as deserts, mountains, and scrublands (brown). This image combines data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard NASA's Terra satellite and NOAA's Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES).

Mars topographical map. Three-dimensional composite satellite image of the surface of Mars. Topographical features are labelled in black. North is at top. Features visible include the Chryse Planitia (just left of centre), a plain with a diameter of around 840 kilometres, and Olympus Mons (far centre left), the tallest known volcano and mountain in our solar system. The map was created using data from the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft's Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter.

Mississippi Delta, USA, satellite image. North is at top. The Mississippi River flows from top left through the city of New Orleans (white, upper left), and down to lower right, and out into the Gulf of Mexico. Much of the land in the image has been built up by sediments deposited by the river. The latest phase of delta formation can be seen at bottom right, and swirling patterns in the water and varying colours show the formation of sand banks and the presence of turbulent sediments. This area is around 200 kilometres across. Image data obtained on 12 October 1991.

Satellite image of the dark, or far, side of the Moon taken at a distance of about 1.6 million kilometres from Earth. This is the hemisphere of the Moon that is never visible from Earth. It was first imaged in 1959 by the Soviet Luna 3 spacecraft. Notable features on the far side include the Sea of Moscow (dark area at upper left) and the Tsiolkovskiy Crater (dark area at lower left). Image obtained by NASA's Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) on board the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite on 16th July 2015.

Chesapeake Bay estuary. Satellite image, using visible and infrared light, of the complex estuary system of Chesapeake Bay (at lower centre) on the eastern coast of the USA. North is at top. Numerous rivers empty into Chesapeake Bay, including the Potomac (lower left) and Susquehanna (at upper centre). The Delaware River enters its own estuary at centre right. The Appalachian mountains appear at top left. The cities of Richmond (lower left), Washington D.C. Algae bloom in the Baltic Sea. Satellite image of a phytoplankton bloom (green swirls) in the nutrient-rich waters around Sweden's Gotland island in the Baltic Sea. Phytoplankton are microscopic marine plants that form the basis of nearly all ocean food chains. Such blooms occur when deep currents bring nutrients up to sunlit surface waters, fueling the growth and reproduction of the phytoplankton. Image obtained by Landsat 7 satellite on 13 July 2005.

Scotland, UK, satellite image. North is at top. Colours approximate to natural tones. The southern lowlands are mainly green, while the highlands of the north are brown. To the west of the mainland are the Hebrides islands, with the Outer Hebrides further west than the Inner Hebrides. The Orkney Islands are just off the north-eastern tip of the mainland, with the Shetland Isles at upper right. Scotland's capital city is Edinburgh, on the south coast of the Firth of Forth, the large inlet just right of lower centre. Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland, is the grey patch west of Edinburgh. Mississippi Delta. True colour Landsat satellite image of the Mississippi River Delta, Louisiana, USA. North is at top. The Mississippi River is seen running from top left into the Gulf of Mexico at bottom left. A delta is an area of sedimentation (deposition) at the mouth of a river. It is transitory and new channels are constantly forming while others become blocked. Image taken on 9th April 1976.

Pale Blue Dot. Image of the Earth taken by the Narrow Angle Camera (NAC) on-board the Voyager 1 spacecraft. This image, known as the 'Pale Blue Dot', is part of the first ever 'family portrait' of the solar system taken by Voyager 1 on 14th February 1990, from a distance of around 4 billion miles (6 billion kilometres) from Earth. It is composed of three images taken through different colour filters - violet, blue and green - and recombined to create the final version seen here.

Pale Blue Dot. Image of the Earth taken by the Narrow Angle Camera (NAC) on-board the Voyager 1 spacecraft. This image, known as the 'Pale Blue Dot', is part of the first ever 'family portrait' of the solar system taken by Voyager 1 on 14th February 1990, from a distance of around 6 billion kilometres from Earth. It is composed of three images taken through different colour filters - violet, blue and green - and recombined to create the final version seen here. For the image's 30th anniversary it has been updated using modern image-processing software and techniques.

Eta Carinae nebula. Coloured Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of part of the Eta Carinae nebula. This large pillar of cold hydrogen gas and dust is the site of star birth. The narrow pillar (pointing towards top left) alone measures one light year in length. Two stellar jets, or Herbig- Haro objects (white streaks) are seen bursting from the cloud. The ultraviolet radiation in these jets, which are formed by the young hot stars, is slowly eroding the pillar. The Eta Carinae Nebula is around 10,000 light years from Earth in the constellation of Carina. Image taken using Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys.

Marine phytoplankton bloom. Satellite image of a large green bloom of phytoplankton in the Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea. Every summer, the nutrient-rich, cooler waters of the northern basins of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans promote more growth among marine plants and phytoplankton than is found in tropical waters. This produces massive blooms of phytoplankton that spread across hundreds and sometimes thousands of kilometres. Blooms off Scandinavia in the summer of 2018 were particularly intense. Imaged by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on NASA's Landsat 8 satellite, on 18th July 2018.

Pentagon building. Ikonos satellite image of the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defence, Virginia, USA. It is located just outside Washington DC, the capital of the USA. North is at right. Ikonos orbits the Earth at a height of 680 kilometres. This image obtained on 28 December 2000.
