The Abbey Church of St Mary the Virgin at Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. There had apparently been a place of worship here fron the C7th but it was a Norman, Robert FitzHarmon who founded this abbey. Building started in 1102 and it was consecrated in 1121, housing a community of Benedictine monks.After the Dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII it became the parish church. The Abbey Mill in the ancient town of Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. It stands on a stretch nof the River Avon appropriately called the Mill Avon. Although now residential, the mill started life in about 1190 asd the corn mill for the nearby abbey. It is said that the monks excavated the Mill Avon - joining further on with the River Severn - to drive the water wheel. It was then rebuilt in 1793 and had four uindershot wheels - the remains of one still in evidence. It ceased working in 1920. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The Abbey Mill Weir on the River Avon at Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. This is at the end of the navigable section of the Mill Avon, an extension to the River Avon constructed by the Abbey's monks in the C12th. This provided power for the Abbey Mill which at one time apparently had four wheels! The weir as we see it now helps control flood water and ithe sluices are controlled from the white building on the right of the image. The mill itself closed in 1921 and is now private apartments. A branch of the River Avon as it flows through the town of Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. The town stands at the point where the Avon meets the River Severn - a very strategic position in ancient times! It has a distincly medieval feel with many buildings dating from that time.
