While Alice is in Wonderland, she consults a hookah smoking caterpillar about her size problem. It’s such a bother to only be 3" tall, unless you are a caterpillar.

I messed up a beautiful painting of blue Irises by Vincent Van Gogh to add in a few characters from a very early copy of Alice in Wonderland. The pictures from the early copy of the book were wildly painted. The colors seemed to bleed into one another in the oddest of places. Well, for other oddballs like me, maybe you’ll appreciate this one.

Straight out of Lewis Carroll's 1865 children's storybook "Alice in Wonderland" is depicted a cartoon re-imagining of the scene where Alice meets the caterpillar, who is smoking a hookah atop a giant mushroom.

From one of the earliest versions of the book, this illustration shows Alice and the caterpillar. The drawing is done in color.

Arthur Rackham's illustrations add an unnerving element of realism to the gothic victorian imagery of Carroll's Wonderland. Alice's meeting with The Caterpillar, amidst a forest of mushrooms, reveals the vulnerable nightmarish undertones within the story. (More designs like this in The Blue Box)
