I was on my first visit to Utah, it was my first day, with a visit to Dead Horse Point State Park on the agenda. Getting out of the car and looking over the cliff and down into the valley was a stunning introduction to the extraordinary landscape. The scale and the colour in the panorama were truly breathtaking. This image is a composite of several images captured from near to the visitor centre, taking in perhaps 180° of view. I suppose I didn't know where to stop as I scanned the horizon with my camera. The word 'awesome' barely covers the emotion.

The legend of Dead Horse Point states that around the turn of the century the point was used as a corral for wild mustangs roaming the mesa top. Cowboys herded them across the narrow neck of land and onto the point. The neck was then fenced off with branches and brush. One time, for some unknown reason, horses were left corralled on the waterless point where they died of thirst within view of the Colorado River 2,000 feet below Dead Horse Point State Park , Utah, USA June 2016

I took a gamble. I was staying in Moab for the night. I had checked into the hotel, went for dinner and on my way back to the hotel I met a local photographer walking down the road. I asked him about places to go and shoot a sunset. He wasn't very nice or friendly. He just said "you won't find a place around here." So I walked off and decided I would take the drive to Dead Horse Point State Park. I had found it doing some research at dinner. I was glad I went.

The sunsetting over Dead Horse Point State Park. A few hours earlier I was sitting at dinner in Moab and while doing a search for sunset locations came across this State Park. At first I thought it was a bit far from where I was staying. I took a gamble and WOW. This place was amazing and definitely somewhere I would return to.
