The unique landscape of Dungeness is the UK's only desert. Dungeness is formed mostly of a shingle beach in the form of a cuspate foreland. Cuspate forelands are also known as cuspate barriers or Nesses. They extend outwards from the shoreline in a triangular shape and in the case of Dungeness are stabilized by vegetation forming a unique eco system. Dungeness is served by the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch miniature railway. It has two nuclear power stations, one active and one shut down, as well as two light houses one of which was manned, now a tourist attraction and the other computer controlled. The shoreline, unlike a lot of the UK which is being eroded is actually being added to, so the original lighthouse became too far in land ...

Another picture inspired by my trip to Dungeness, this features the old fishing shack strewn with torn nets and favoured by many a photographer. The nets were a challenge, but I found by drawing them firmly in coloured pencil and then running over in a soft graphite pencil, the graphite would fill the gaps and leave the coloured pencil showing. The original picture was drawn A4 size on cartridge paper, and sold in October 2015. The peninsula at Dungeness is famed for the gentle decay of what were once fishing boats and the associated tools of the trade. Impressions of Dungeness This is the Marconi Structure or 'Sheds' at Dungeness. Built around the late 1890's Guglielmo Marconi used this building as a research and development centre for transmitting radio signals. This piece is inspired by a trip that I took (pre lockdown) to the beautiful but haunting coastline of Dungeness; the UK's only desert.

The High Light Tower is situated on Dungeness Point in Kent, an open, wild area of shingle which is also an important nature reserve. The lighthouse tower was built in 1901, replacing an earlier one. It is no longer functioning as a lighthouse but is open as a visitor attraction

Impressions of Dungeness This was the home of Michael Derek Elworthy Jarman. 31st January 1942 to 19th February 1994. He was an English film director, stage designer, diarist, artist, gardener and author. On 22nd December 1986 he was diagnosed as HIV positive. His illness prompted him to move to Prospect Cottage. Here he created his famous garden using the plants that naturally grew at Dungeness. In 1994 he died of an AIDS related illness in London aged just 52. Some are owned by people trying to escape the pressures of the rat-race. These properties have a high value on the property market.
