This design is a maze in the shape Lake Huron, one of the five Great Lakes in the United States and Canada and the third largest by volume. Lake Huron is bordered by the U.S. State of Michigan and the Canadian Province of Ontario. It is also connected to Lake Michigan by the Straits of Mackinac. The maze begins on the left near Mackinac Island and ends on the lower right.

On a walk in London, aimless and free, I noticed this building on a corner, and I was struck by its brick design; 1, 2, 3. The building itself drew me further, and I admired the variety of bricks, different colours being used to create patterns, as the bricks, unlike paint, wouldn’t vanish under a veil of soot. Above me, the sky was ever changing, clouds travelling rapidly through the cool air. Yet here, nothing much had changed for a century and more. The work is rich in colour, suffused with terracotta and autumnal atmosphere, with realism and fluidity. A great souvenir of London, a lovely addition to any collection, and a perfect gift.

On a French island, in the height of summer, I walk along deserted streets. Shutters closed against the heat, against the light that bleaches colour and penetrates the interior. The village is almost silent, as noon approaches. Crickets, bees, the faint keys of a piano. The scent of oregano, thyme, rose and jasmine I love the colour and the texture of the walls, creamy lemon, with shutters of faded blue. Little balconies of wrought iron, overhanging flowers. Paradis indeed.

A weekend exploring Hull, wondering streets evocative of another time, snippets of childhood, a fascination with red brick and terracotta chimney stacks, a fascination with symmetry and Victorian dimensions. The day is mine, to explore as I wish, and I find myself in the Avenues, a Bohemian-feeling expanse of roads and alleys, baked under a hot sun in a wide sky. The tiles, the bricks, the walls absorb the day’s heat, releasing their nectar of tar and creosote, intoxicating and Proustian scents. An ice cream van’s jingle, with a bitter-sweet pang, the hum of traffic on the main roads nearby, and the breeze that carries a tang from the Humber and the North Sea. A lovely gift, a great souvenir of Hull.

It was built in the 14th century to house the Vicars Choral who sang in the adjacent cathedral. Now the 27 Grade 1 listed buildings house the present choristers together with organists and vergers.
