Whitby is situated on the Yorkshire Coast. To the south lies the coastal villages and resorts of Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington. All these are well within a short drive from Whitby. The nearest city inland is York. From the old town of Whitby, 199 steps lead up to the parish church of St. Mary, whose churchyard on Whitby's East Cliff gave Bram Stoker the inspiration to write his world famous book, Dracula

This view is based on a photo I took some years ago when I walked the coast to coast path, but starting here in Whitby rather than Robin Hood Bay. It was a bit misty and grey, so the buildings in the background fade away. If you want to colour it in during lockdown, the main colours are dark red, grey and white, with most of the roofs and many of the walls being the dark red. The town is best known for its connections with Dracula, but it makes an interesting place to visit regardless. Drawn in (dipping) pen and ink on A3 cartridge paper, using a pencil grid to get the rough positions right.

The Bark Endeavour, is an authentic replica of HMS Endeavour - which was sailed by Captain James Cook during his scientific expedition of 1768 - has been traditionally built by Whitby craftsmen and is approximately 40% of the ships original size.

Whitby, 199 Steps The 199 Whitby Abbey steps are one challenge visitors to the town cannot resist. They’re one of Whitby's most famous attractions. But, how much do you know about the history of Whitby steps? The first record of the Whitby Abbey steps comes from 1340, but they’re believed to be even older. The steps were originally made from wood. It was not until 1774 that the original wooden steps were replaced with stone from Sneaton.

This is from an original watercolour and is notable for the simplicity of pallet and a delicacy of touch that brings this famous scene to life. It was the view as we walked down into Whitby from Sandsend and looked up to see the iconic abbey overlooking the houses. Is it beautiful or a little sinister with its Gothic associations as the scene of Dracula's last stand?
